My oil/mixed media paintings, inspired by nature and travel, reflect my involvement with the process of making art. I am not concerned with rendering what I see, but am challenged to express my reaction to what I see.
Specifically, I am inspired by the incredible landscape of Pennsylvania's Endless Mountains, where I spend the summer. For many years, I have worked to transform these rural images into visions that express my fascination with the interplay between the organic and the architectural.
Thus, the landscape serves as a springboard from which I explore ideas about color, pattern, marks and energy. Frequently, the finished piece is a composite of memories, sometimes partly hidden or blatantly apparent. Often, I use lines or "threads" to embody a motion, a walk taken or a connection between places/memories. Sometimes, they are simply a gesture expressing the joy of a particular memory.
I often work in series, a format which offers both a challenge and freedom to explore and to innovate. The series, "Vespa Memories" was inspired by walks taken along a uniquely beautiful dirt road. (the previous owner had an old Vespa!) A recent series, "Haybales", expresses my fascination with the bales left in farmer's fields: clustered in family groups, sitting proudly independent or looking frazzled.
Throughout years of painting, color has remained a constant and motivating voice in my art. It is my hope that my paintings will be intimately explored and enjoyed for their unique reality.
